In the Liverpool of 1868, a trainee nurse who has had a child out of wedlock struggles to be both a good nurse and dutiful mother, but gets by with help from friends, and even senses the start of a new romance. The baby's father returns, complicating matters. Eastham is set to write two books a year, focusing on nursing.
