Before a child can read, he/she first needs to know the sounds of the alphabet. Once that's done, then it will be easy to actually read a word. An effective take at phonics would be the use of picture words. Such a layout attracts and keep a child's attention. It also makes the subject easier to master because a child can easily associate a word with a picture.
