Originally published in 1919 in the author's larger "The American Negro in the World War," this paperback edition tells the true story of the tough "Harlem Hellfighters," the all-black regiment (369th Infantry Regiment) of the U.S. Army that served with the French against the Germans in World War I-the only regiment that "never lost a man captured, a trench, or a foot of ground." About the Author A son of ex-slaves, Emmett J. Scott (1873-1957) for many years served as confidant, secretary and speechwriter for Booker T. Washington. During World War I he was appointed Special Assistant to the Secretary of War. Other works include "Tuskegee and Its People" and (as co-author) "Booker T. Washington, Builder of a Civilization."
